Police arrested a Sacramento County man this week on 42 counts of sexual assault involving a child, authorities said, and he is suspected of molesting children in his care since the early 1980s.

The Roseville Police Department on Thursday morning announced the Tuesday arrest of Steven Ellis Murray, 61, a resident of Antelope.

“Murray is suspected of repeatedly molesting children in his care with incidents dating back 40 years ago,” the Roseville Police Department said in a news release.

Placer County court records indicate that the felony 42 charges pursued against Murray relate to sexual assaults committed between 1988 and 1993. The alleged crimes are not subject to California’s statute of limitations restrictions because they were reported to law enforcement within the past year, records show.

Placer and Sacramento court records show no prior convictions for Murray, who is being held at the South Placer Jail with bail set at $2 million. He is set to be arraigned Thursday afternoon.

The investigation into the alleged sexual assaults remains ongoing. Anyone with information or who was victimized by Murray is asked to contact Detective Alana Grove at agrove@roseville.ca.us or the Roseville Police Department’s investigations unit at 916-746-1059.
