Two charged with hate crime and assault after stabbing at Auburn gas station

A 35-year-old man and 23-year-old woman face charges including a hate crime after being arrested for an assault and stabbing at a Speedway Gas Station in Auburn.

Police responded to the gas station on Drive-In Way around 10 p.m. Friday after reports of an assault and a stabbing. Witnesses told deputies a white man and woman had stood in front of the victim’s pickup truck, yelling racial slurs at him. The argument turned physical when the man allegedly hit the victim with his fist before stabbing him in the upper torso, according to the Sheriff’s Office’s Facebook post.

The suspects, Cory Smith and Jaylynn Garrell, walked away from the scene, but deputies located and arrested the pair less than a mile from the gas station, police said.

Smith was charged with conspiracy, assault with a deadly weapon, a hate crime, possession of a controlled substance, battery and carrying a concealed dagger. Garrell was charged with violating her probation terms, conspiracy, assault with a deadly weapon and a hate crime.
