West Sacramento officers shoot and kill armed man, police department says
West Sacramento officers fatally shot a man early Saturday morning who the police department said was armed with a gun.
In a news release, the department said officers were initially called out to the 1800 block of West Capitol Avenue around 3 a.m. on reports of an armed suspect in the area.
The person who made the call identified the suspect as “an African American male adult, approximately 30 years of age, holding a firearm.”
Multiple officers arrived and began searching the area for the suspect and made contact with others in the vicinity. One officer noticed a man sitting in a vehicle behind police near the intersection of Merkley Avenue and Poplar Avenue.
The West Sacramento Police Department said that a Black man walked out of the vehicle with a handgun when the officer attempted to make contact with him and “a shooting ensued.” Further details about the shooting were not disclosed.
Police performed life-saving measures while first responders were dispatched. Paramedics pronounced the man dead at the scene. No officers were injured in the shooting.
Six officers were in the area and four were directly involved in the shooting, according to the department. Among them were a sergeant with 15 years experience and three others with less than five years experience each, the agency said. All four will be placed on administrative leave while the Davis Police Department conducts an investigation of the shooting.
The man killed was not identified.
