Body found in vacant apartment investigated as homicide, Sacramento sheriff’s officials say

Sacramento County sheriff’s detectives are investigating a suspected homicide after the body of a 43-year-old was found in a vacant North Highlands apartment.

Deputies responded to a call reporting the body around 5:15 p.m. Sunday at an apartment in the 5800 block of Walerga Road, the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office said Monday in a news release.

“Based on the condition of the body, deputies were unable to immediately identify a cause of death,” the news release said. “However, based on evidence at the scene, the death did not appear natural.”

The statement didn’t specify what that evidence was, as the investigation remains ongoing.

The Sheriff’s Office says homicide detectives determined the victim is “associated with the apartment,” but information regarding the exact circumstances of his death, as well as suspect information and motive, remain unclear.

The victim’s identity will be released by the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office after the family is notified.
