Update: More details on death of pedestrian in Arden Arcade
A pedestrian was struck and killed Wednesday night at an intersection in Arden Arcade when she stepped in front of an oncoming car.
The California Highway Patrol said the 79-year-old Sacramento woman was killed after being struck by the car at Alta Arden Expressway and Professional Drive about 11:30 p.m. The car was eastbound on Alta Arden Expressway in the right lane as the driver approached a green light at Professional Drive.
The woman was standing on the southeast curb at the intersection, and, as the car approached, she stepped into the path of the vehicle. The car struck the pedestrian in a marked crosswalk.
However, according to witnesses, the driver of the car had the right of way and was proceeding on a green traffic signal when the woman stepped into the roadway against a pedestrian traffic signal forbidding her to cross.
The streetlights at the intersection were not illuminated, according to a CHP news release.
The driver stopped and spoke with officers. The woman, who has not been identified, died at the scene.
