Man killed in Sacramento shooting may have been burglar shot by homeowner, police say

Gunshot fatality

A man has died after a shooting Sunday evening in Sacramento’s Fruitridge Manor neighborhood, possibly shot by a homeowner during an attempted burglary, police said.

Officers responded around 9:10 p.m. to reports of a shooting in the 5500 block of 27th Avenue, just south of West Campus High School, where they located a man with at least one gunshot wound “lying in the street,” the Sacramento Police Department said in a news release.

The gunshot victim was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The Sacramento County Coroner’s Office identified him as Eddie Ward, 25, of Sacramento.

“Based on preliminary information the deceased male may have been involved in an attempted burglary of a residence in the area and was then shot by the homeowner,” the news release said.

Homicide detectives continue to investigate the circumstances of the shooting. No other details were immediately available, and no arrests have been made.
