Sacramento County sheriff’s deputy hits, kills pedestrian near Elk Grove

A Sacramento County sheriff’s deputy hit a pedestrian while driving near Elk Grove, and the person died Friday after a night in the hospital.

In a news release, the Sheriff’s Office said that the deputy — who works at the Rio Cosumnes Correctional Center — was driving a marked patrol vehicle north on the 10,000 block of Franklin Boulevard just before 10:45 p.m. Thursday when they hit the pedestrian.

Sheriff’s Office officials described that stretch of Franklin Boulevard as “foggy” and “rural.” That portion of roadway comprises two lanes in each direction, separated by a median.

Two witnesses told the Sheriff’s Office that the victim was standing in the middle of the road, facing away from oncoming traffic.

The deputy rendered first aid until fire personnel arrived. The person was then taken to a hospital for treatment.

The victim remained in critical condition overnight and died Friday afternoon, according to the Sheriff’s Office. The deputy was not injured.

The Sacramento County Coroner’s Office will release the name of the victim after notifying their next of kin.

The California Highway Patrol will be investigating the crash. The Sheriff’s Office also will investigate.

Sgt. Kionna Rowe, a Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman, said she could not comment on the administrative status of the deputy involved in the crash or provide further details.

“We have no further information to release at this time regarding the incident or personnel matters,” Rowe said in a text message to The Sacramento Bee.
