Placerville police arrested two women who allegedly assaulted two people on Halloween night with a “hatchet-like weapon.”

Theodora Economou and Vivian Bertrand were each booked into the El Dorado County jail on a charge of assault with a deadly weapon. Economou faces an additional charge of mayhem.

The incident began near the 400 block of Main Street around 10:30 p.m. Sunday, when officers responded to reports of an assault in progress, the Placerville Police Department said in a news release.

Arriving officers located a female victim “suffering from a severe facial wound near her left eye,” according to the news release.

According to initial investigations, Economou and Bertrand were allegedly damaging private property on Main Street when the first victim confronted them.

“The suspects turned their attention toward the victim and proceeded to attack her with an edged weapon,” police wrote.

A second victim, a male friend of the first victim, intervened and attempted to stop the attack, according to the Police Department, when Bertrand “began to attack this individual with an edged weapon, causing an injury to his left thumb.”

The two suspects then reportedly fled west on Main Street, where the male victim and other witnesses chased them, authorities said.

The male victim detained Bertrand in a parking lot until police arrived, according to the news release.

Economou, meanwhile, jumped a chain link fence on Main Street into a creek. Officers located her “underneath heavy shrubbery in the creek bed,” the news release said.

Police recovered “a small hatchet-like weapon” used to assault the first victim, who was transported for treatment for her severe facial injury. The male victim was treated at the scene by medics and later sought additional treatment at a hospital, according to police.

Booking logs show Economou and Bertrand have since been released from jail. Their bails had been set at $200,000 and $50,000, respectively.
