A Sacramento Police Department K-9 was stabbed Friday evening as officers were attempting a warrant arrest in West Tahoe Park.

In a news release, the agency said officers, accompanied by a K-9 named Ranger, were sent out to a home on the 5300 block of Ninth Avenue around 8:30 p.m. to conduct an arrest.

The suspect, Hans Schroeder, 58, was wanted on a felony arrest warrant on suspicion of stalking and making threats.

The department said that as the officers approached his home, Schroeder fled out a backdoor with a knife.

An officer and Ranger tried to apprehend Schroeder, who stabbed the K-9 in the abdomen, according to the police department.

After Schroeder was taken into custody, Ranger was taken to VCA Sacramento for emergency surgery. Police said Ranger is expected to make a full recovery.

Schroeder was taken to a hospital for non-life threatening arm injuries inflicted by Ranger. As of Saturday morning, he had not yet been processed at the Sacramento County Main Jail, but police said that he will be booked on charges stemming from his warrant and faces charges for assaulting a police K-9.

“The Sacramento Police Department would like to thank the veterinary staff for their hard work in helping K9 Ranger,” police officials wrote in a news release. “SPD would also like to thank the outside law enforcement agencies that assisted our department.”
