Update: Elk Grove woman expected to survive stabbing attack; suspect identified as 19-year-old
A woman stabbed in her Elk Grove home Wednesday afternoon was hospitalized and her suspected attacker was arrested in an incident that stunned neighbors and briefly locked down an elementary school.
Police said late Wednesday the unidentified woman was expected to survive. No one else was injured, authorities said.
Just after 2 p.m., police said they swarmed a home in the 3100 block of Halyard Drive — in the city’s Lakeside neighborhood — and rushed into nearby neighborhoods searching for the suspect. The man, later identified as 19-year-old Samual Eman Boston, was arrested “a few miles” away from the victim’s address about an hour later, Elk Grove police spokesman Jason Jimenez said at the scene.
Neighbors had watched as Elk Grove police, some armed with rifles and carrying shields, sped to the Halyard home.
“We heard sirens and thought they were far away, then we heard yelling,” said neighbor Joe Van Houten from his garage, just a few feet away from the long line of patrol cruisers and officers along the street. “We heard an ambulance, then (police) started taping everything off and ran down the street with guns.”
A clutch of officers, detectives and forensics technicians emerged from the home at about 3 p.m. By then, police had apprehended Boston, who faces attempted murder charges and is being held without bail. He is expected to be formally charged before a judge Friday.
“I heard the sirens, then saw the cop cars and I said, ‘What’s going on?’” neighbor John Kwang said. “When I saw them pull out the shields and the guns, I knew something was going on.”
Police later called the attack an “isolated incident,” and sent officers fanning out in the neighborhood to assure people they were not in danger.
The incident briefly locked down Stonelake Elementary School several blocks to the northeast, where dozens of students and school staff were on campus. Officials said the school was operating on a half-day schedule Wednesday, so only a few dozen children were on campus when the precautionary lockdown was ordered. They were dismissed when the campus was considered safe.
