Davis man sentenced to 6 years in prison for raping roommate’s girlfriend
A Davis man has been sentenced to six years in prison for raping his roommate’s girlfriend while she slept.
Jon Paul Dunlevy, 41, in October was found guilty by a Yolo Superior Court jury of rape of an unconscious person.
Prosecutors said Dunlevy raped a 23-year-old woman on Sept. 2, 2018, as she visited her boyfriend at his Davis home. The woman woke up early the next morning to find Dunlevy sexually assaulting her, the Yolo County District Attorney’s Office said in a news release.
“After she woke up and fought him off, Dunlevy acted as if nothing had happened and even laughed at the victim asking why she was hitting him,” the news release continued.
DNA evidence linked Dunlevy to the sexual assault, prosecutors said.
Judge David Rosenberg on Monday sentenced Dunlevy to six years in state prison. Dunlevy will be required to register for life as a convicted sex offender.
According to the DA’s news release, Rosenberg called Dunlevy “one of the ‘worst liars’ he had seen in his courtroom,” citing several conflicting explanations he gave.
“The excuses ranged from mistaken identity, to it never happened, to claiming it was only a kiss, to it was an accident, to claiming the victim engaged in lewd conduct to induce him,” the District Attorney’s Office wrote.
The victim testified at trial with an emotional impact statement.
“She gave an incredibly powerful impact statement, which no-doubt, played a key-role into Mr. Dunlevy receiving his 6-year prison term,” District Attorney Jeff Reisig said in a prepared statement. “Her tremendous display of courage is an inspiration and hopefully, gives that same courage to others to come forward.”
