Update: Suspect who shot at Sacramento police officers faces attempted murder charges
The Sacramento Police Department has arrested a man suspected of shooting at officers Sunday, which prompted an hourslong manhunt in a Fruitridge Manor neighborhood.
The department on Monday identified the suspect as Jacob Armada, 19.
He was booked into Sacramento County Main Jail and faces two felony charges of attempted murder, two charges of assault with a deadly weapon, a felony charge of harming a police K-9 and a misdemeanor charge of resisting arrest, according to the Police Department and jail booking logs. He is ineligible for bail.
The Police Department set up a perimeter and blocked off traffic in a neighborhood near 63rd Street and Lemon Hill Avenue as of 10 a.m. Department spokesman Officer Karl Chan said in a media briefing around noon several people called 911 around 9 a.m. to report a man in the area with a firearm. Officers responded and the suspect fired at the police, Chan said, and at least one officer returned fire.
No major injuries were reported as a result of the shooting. A round struck one officer’s uniform pants, nearly hitting their leg, the Police Department said in a news release late Sunday.
The armed man fled and a manhunt ensued, Chan said. Police believed he was on foot somewhere within the perimeter. A police helicopter hovered overhead as officers searched Sunday morning. SWAT officers and crisis negotiators were also in the area.
At 4:45 p.m., police said a man who was hiding in the area was detained by officers. He was hiding in a trash can, according to the news release.
Armada was taken into custody with assistance from a K-9, and he was receiving treatment for injuries from the police dog.
Chan said police set up an extensive perimeter for hours Sunday, from 65th Street on the east side to Stockton Boulevard. Residents in the perimeter were asked to shelter in place.
