Infant shot by BB gun in apparent accident at West Sacramento motel, police say

Police tape at crime scene

An 18-year-old woman accidentally discharged a BB gun and struck her infant daughter Tuesday at a motel in West Sacramento, police said. The child had non-life-threatening injuries.

Officers responded around 4 p.m. to the Motel 6 near Interstate 80 and Harbor Boulevard, following a 911 caller reporting that her 1-year-old daughter had been shot, the West Sacramento Police Department said in a news release.

Authorities arrived and determined the infant had been shot in the “extremities,” according to the news release, and medical personnel transported the child to a hospital as a precaution.

“After a preliminary investigation, it was determined the mother accidentally discharged a BB gun and it struck the infant,” police wrote.

No arrests have been made, and an investigation is ongoing. Yolo County Child Welfare Services is assisting the Police Department in its investigation.

The involved parties were not identified.
