Sacramento County deputies shoot carjacking suspect near Carmichael apartments

Police tape at crime scene

Deputies with the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office shot a carjacking suspect Friday night in Carmichael during a shootout near an apartment complex.

In a news release, the Sheriff’s Office said that dispatchers were called about 6 p.m. by the victim of a carjacking, who said that he was held at gunpoint while leaving work in the 9800 block of Park Drive in Rancho Cordova. After handing over his keys, the gunman drove off in his SUV.

Deputies met with the victim and tracked the late-model Ford Explorer using GPS to Walnut Avenue and El Camino Avenue in Carmichael.

There deputies found the unoccupied Explorer in the parking lot at an apartment complex in the 5100 block of El Camino.

As law enforcement began setting up a perimeter around the complex, a man attempted to run from the area and fired multiple rounds at deputies, according to the Sheriff’s Office. Deputies returned fire as the man ran west on El Camino.

The man continued firing rounds and attempted to carjack another occupied vehicle in the parking lot of a business in the 5000 block of El Camino. However, the man was shot “at least one time” by deputies, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District personnel took the man to a hospital in “critical but stable condition.” Officials said the 44-year-old man is known to local and state law enforcement agencies, and he will be booked into the Sacramento County Main Jail on multiple felony charges after his release from the hospital.

No deputies or civilians were injured in the shootout. The deputies involved in the shooting will be placed on paid administrative leave while the incident is investigated.

The Sheriff’s Office will conduct an internal investigation into the officer-involved shooting. The Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office and the Office of Inspector General will provide an independent review, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
