Sacramento man arrested on DUI charges in I-80 crash that injured CHP sergeant, 3 others
A Sacramento man was arrested on suspicion of driving drunk after a chain-reaction collision involving four vehicles, which injured a California Highway Patrol sergeant and three other drivers early Friday on Interstate 80.
William Letson, 33, was arrested on suspicion of DUI causing injury and driving with a blood alcohol content of .08% or greater causing injury, the CHP North Sacramento Area Office announced in a news release Friday evening.
The crash was reported shortly after 3 a.m. on the westbound lanes of I-80, east of Reed Avenue. Officers arrived and found an Acura RDX that was involved in a crash with three other vehicles, including a CHP Chevrolet Tahoe patrol vehicle.
All drivers involved in the crash, including a CHP sergeant in the Tahoe, suffered minor injuries, the CHP said.
Investigators determined Letson was driving the Acura RDX west on I-80, when his vehicle crashed with the rear of a Toyota Prius driven by a 42-year-old Elk Grove man, according to the news release.
The CHP said the Prius was pushed forward and toward the road’s right shoulder, where the front of the Prius crashed with the CHP Tahoe. The CHP released photos that showed extensive rear-end damage to the CHP sport utility vehicle.
The Acura RDX came to rest in the I-80 westbound lanes, where it was subsequently struck by a 20-year-old woman driving an Acura TL.
Letson was taken to a hospital before he was booked at the Sacramento County Jail.
Investigators asked anyone who witnessed the crash and has additional information to call Officer A.J. McTaggart at the CHP North Sacramento Area Office at 916-348-2300.
