Citrus Heights police fatally shoot man accused of pointing gun at officers

Breaking News

A Citrus Heights police officer shot and killed a man who allegedly pointed a gun at police late Thursday night.

Officers responded shortly before 9 p.m. to the area of Antelope Road and Tupelo Drive for reports of a possibly intoxicated man brandishing a firearm, the Citrus Heights Police Department said in a news release Friday morning.

Arriving officers “verbally engaged him and attempted to deescalate the incident; however, the subject pointed the gun at the officers,” the department wrote.

One officer “fired his duty weapon, striking the subject,” and officers rendered medical aid after the man was disarmed.

The man was taken to a hospital where he died a short time later, according to the news release. His identity will be released by the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office pending notification of family.

Detectives are investigating the incident, and Antelope Road and Tupelo Drive were closed in the area. The gun allegedly brandished by the suspect was located and taken into custody by investigators, the Police Department wrote.

Police asked any witnesses to the incident to contact the department at 916-727-5524.
