27-year-old woman is killed in a crash west of Yuba City amid heavy fog, the CHP says

A woman was killed in a crash Saturday morning amid dense fog west of Yuba City.

In a news release, the Yuba-Sutter area California Highway Patrol said that the 27-year-old Yuba City woman was driving a 2018 Toyota Corolla east on Highway 20 over the Sutter Bypass Bridge just before 7:15 a.m., west of West Butte Road.

Visibility was limited to about 100 feet due to the thick fog, according to the CHP.

A 34-year-old man, also from Yuba City, was driving in a 2006 GMC Sierra westbound on the same highway at a speed of 55 mph

The driver of the Toyota lost control of her vehicle and began spinning out on the two-lane highway, according to the CHP. The GMC driver swerved to the left when he saw her enter his lane but struck the passenger side of the Toyota, causing “major damage,” CHP said.

The driver of the Toyota was declared dead at the scene of the crash by first responders. The GMC driver was not injured in the crash.

Highway 20 was closed for more than an hour as CHP officers investigated the crash. Investigators are still unsure if drugs or alcohol were a factor.

The woman’s name was withheld by the CHP as her next of kin has not yet been notified.
