Officers arrested a suspected DUI driver accused of traveling the wrong way on Interstate 5 early Wednesday morning in Yolo County. The man allegedly passed out behind the wheel of his vehicle, then led officers on a brief foot pursuit after being woken up.

The incident happened around 2:30 a.m. near County Road 6 in Dunnigan, the Yolo County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release, where dispatchers received multiple calls about a driver heading southbound in the northbound lanes of I-5.

Deputies responded and located the described vehicle stopped on the shoulder, still in gear. The driver “was passed out behind the wheel, with his foot on the brake pedal,” the Sheriff’s Office wrote.

Deputies knocked on the window, sheriff’s officials said, and the “semiconscious” driver’s foot lifted off the brake.

“The vehicle started moving forward, but deputies were able to get the car door open and remove the driver after a short foot chase,” authorities wrote.

California Highway Patrol officers responded to assist and arrested the driver on suspicion of driving under the influence, the Sheriff’s Office wrote.

The suspect was not named but was described as a 49-year-old man from Washington state.
