A loaded Glock 9mm pistol was found in a student’s backpack at Luther Bank High School in Sacramento during a probation search Wednesday, January 26, 2022.

A student was arrested this week after bringing a loaded handgun onto a high school campus in Sacramento, county probation officials said.

Probation officers responded to Luther Burbank High School in Sacramento’s Parkway neighborhood Wednesday after receiving a tip that “a youth had possibly been in possession of a gun the week prior,” the Sacramento County Probation Department said in a Friday social media post.

A probation search of the juvenile’s backpack “revealed a loaded Glock 9mm pistol,” and officers during a search of the student’s residence “located an additional 27 round magazine,” the post said.

The juvenile was booked into the Sacramento County Youth Detention Facility on charges of possession of a firearm by a minor and possession of a firearm on school grounds, authorities said. The student was not identified.

Sacramento City Unified School District spokesman Al Goldberg confirmed the incident.

“The student was escorted by school staff to a conference room where they met with the Probation Officers,” Goldberg wrote in an emailed response. “A search of their property resulted in the recovery of a firearm, at which time the student was detained. The student’s parents were notified and that the student was in custody of Probation Officers.

“Sacramento City Unified School District thanks the Sacramento County Probation Department for their efforts to keep our schools safe.”
