Authorities identify body of woman found buried in snow for weeks in South Lake Tahoe

Authorities have identified the body of a woman found buried in a snowy meadow and discovered by a wildlife photographer last month in South Lake Tahoe.

The body of Tracey Megenhardt, a 50-year-old transient woman known in South Lake Tahoe, was found Jan. 22 behind a US Bank branch and Rite Aid pharmacy along Trout Creek, South Lake Tahoe Police Detective Allen Molesworth told The Sacramento Bee on Tuesday.

At the time of the discovery, police officials said foul play was not suspected in the death. On Tuesday, Molesworth said investigators had not yet determined the cause of Megenhardt’s death.

Police said last month that her body appeared to have been buried at some point during the late December snowstorms, and the human remains were revealed after the snow melted.
