Driver in custody after 14-year-old pedestrian killed in hit-and-run east of Placerville
A 14-year-old girl was killed in a hit-and-run crash Tuesday in El Dorado County, authorities said.
California Highway Patrol officers responded around 4:15 p.m. to Carson Road east of Barkley Road in the town of Camino, where officers discovered a teenage pedestrian had been struck and killed by a vehicle, the CHP’s Placerville office said in a news release.
Investigators determined the girl was walking eastbound on the north shoulder of Carson Road in the area when a 2018 Honda SUV veered off the road, fatally striking her, according to the news release.
The Honda driver fled the scene westbound on Carson Road, toward the Apple Hill area, the CHP said.
Authorities located the Honda and its driver, identified as 23-year-old Anthony Baron Smith of Pollock Pines, later Tuesday evening.
Smith was arrested and booked into the El Dorado County jail on felony charges of voluntary manslaughter and driving under the influence of alcohol resulting in bodily injury, in connection with Tuesday’s crash, booking records show.
The victim’s identity has not been released by the coroner, but was identified in the CHP collision report as a 14-year-old girl from Camino.
The investigation remains ongoing, the CHP Placerville office said.
