Suspect in custody following shooting incident on Interstate 80 on-ramp near Davis
Law enforcement officers arrested an Elk Grove man suspected of firing gunshots that struck two vehicles Thursday morning on Interstate 80 near Davis, the California Highway Patrol reported.
Andre Chevill Wilson, 53, was arrested on suspicion of two counts of attempted murder and other criminal charges in connection with the shooting with the occurred shortly after 6 a.m, according to a news release from the CHP Woodland Area Office.
The CHP said Wilson allegedly fired a gun at another motorist heading west on I-80 to the Mace Boulevard exit ramp.
Officers later determined the gunfire struck two vehicles; the occupants in those vehicles were not injured.
After the shooting, Wilson’s vehicle re-entered I-80 and headed west from the Mace Boulevard on-ramp, where his vehicle left the road and crashed into a fence, the CHP said.
Officers found a dark-colored pickup truck that had crashed into a ditch along the right-hand side of the Mace Boulevard on-ramp, according to the CHP activity log.
A reporting party told authorities that the driver of that pickup fired shots at their vehicle. Officers located a handgun on top of the center console inside the pickup truck, as well as at least one bullet casing, according to an entry on the CHP log.
CHP officers, with help from other law enforcement agencies, found Wilson near the crash scene and took him into custody.
The CHP said there were no other suspects involved in the shooting. The CHP Valley Division was leading the shooting investigation.
The Davis Police Department and the Solano County Sheriff’s Office also responded to the crash and reported shooting.
The Davis Police Department sent email and text message alerts around 8 a.m. advising of an “active police incident” as authorities searched for an outstanding suspect, who was located a short time later.
“The police activity in the area of Mace/I80 has concluded with one suspect in custody,” the department wrote in an update sent just before 8:30 a.m.
The westbound off-ramp and on-ramp at Mace Boulevard were shut down by the incident. Caltrans said the off-ramp to Mace was back open but that the on-ramp remained closed as of 11:30 a.m. as law enforcement continue their investigation.
I-80 itself remained open, but Caltrans said traffic at that time was backed up on the westbound side due to the closure.
Amtrak train service in the area was briefly delayed. Amtrak’s Capitol Corridor tweeted at 7:04 a.m. that travel between Davis and Sacramento was temporarily stopped, “due to police activity.”
Amtrak at 7:40 a.m. said train service had resumed, and that riders should expect residual delays.
