Update: Police arrest suspect who returned to the scene of a deadly Elk Grove stabbing
Investigators arrested a man who returned to the scene of a homicide near an Elk Grove bus stop, where a security camera earlier had captured him stabbing another man Sunday evening, police said.
Aaron Spencer, 31, was arrested on suspicion of homicide and booked at the Sacramento County Jail, the Elk Grove Police Department announced Monday afternoon in a news release. Spencer was being held at the jail without bail.
The stabbing was reported about 6:45 p.m. near a bus stop in the 8100 block of Sheldon Road, just east of Lewis Stein Road. Police said officers arrived and found the injured man on the ground suffering from multiple stab wounds. Despite attempts to save his life, the victim died.
Officers started their investigation, searching the area for a possible suspect, potential witnesses and evidence. The officers found security camera video that showed a suspect, later identified as Spencer, approaching the victim, who was lying down near the bus stop, according to the Police Department.
Police said Spencer became agitated and stabbed the victim several times in the upper body before walking away. Spencer later returned to the scene, where he was detained by officers.
Detectives determined Spencer was responsible for the stabbing, but they had not recovered the weapon used, police said.
The Sacramento County Coroner’s Office will release the name of the man killed after his family has been notified.
Investigators ask anyone with information about the fatal stabbing to call the Police Department’s non-emergency line at 916-714-5115.
