Shooting briefly closes Highway 99 near 12th Avenue in Sacramento, CHP says

Authorities closed a portion of Highway 99 in Sacramento for several hours Tuesday afternoon after two vehicles were struck by what the victims believe was gunfire, the California Highway Patrol said.

The shooting was reported about 2:40 p.m. in the northbound lanes of Highway 99, between 12th Avenue and Highway 50, said Officer Mark Leavitt, a spokesman for the CHP South Sacramento office. The roadway was reopened before 6 p.m.

Leavitt said two vehicles were struck by what the victims believe was gunfire; no persons were struck by gunfire. One person in one of the vehicles suffered minor cuts to the face from broken glass, he said.

Authorities closed northbound lanes in that area for about 30 to 45 minutes as investigators searched for evidence. Leavitt said it was unclear whether officers found any evidence on the road.

The CHP did not have any suspect information to release Tuesday evening.
