Teen in custody after allegedly shooting brother in Yuba County, deputies say

Police tape at crime scene

Deputies took a teenage boy into custody following a Thursday afternoon shooting in Yuba County that seriously injured his younger brother, also a teen, authorities said.

Officials responded to the area of McGowan Parkway and Fleming Avenue in Olivehurst shortly before 4:30 p.m., the Yuba County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.

One juvenile victim was taken to a hospital with a gunshot wound described as life-threatening, and a 15-year-old boy was taken into custody, the Sheriff’s Office said.

Sheriff’s officials in an updated statement Friday afternoon said the victim, a 14-year-old Olivehurst boy, is the younger brother of the alleged shooter, who may have unintentionally shot his sibling while attempting to shoot other juveniles.

“Additional minors, whom investigators believe may have been the intended targets of the shooting, ran from the scene and were later contacted by detectives,” the Sheriff’s Office said in a Friday news release.

The teen victim remains hospitalized in critical condition as of Friday.

Detectives continue to actively investigate, “including whether or not the incident was gang related,” authorities wrote.
