Jury convicts man of shooting at Sacramento police officer

A Sacramento Superior Court jury Wednesday convicted a 22-year-old man for shooting at a city police officer during a foot chase out of a liquor store on Mack Road three years ago.

The panel acquitted Devonte Shawn-Dupree Fields, 23, however, of the more serious charge of attempted murder in the Aug. 16, 2011 incident. No one was injured.

Along with the conviction on the count of assault on a peace officer with a semiautomatic weapon, jurors also found Fields guilty of being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm.

Fields pleaded not guilty and not guilty by reason of insanity. The sanity phase of his trial will take place Thursday in front of Judge Laurie M. Earl.
