Davis High School students evacuated after ‘suspicious object’ found on campus

Authorities on Friday evacuated students at Davis Senior High School to the campus stadium as police officers and firefighters investigated what was later determined to be a “fake device,” officials said.

Davis Senior High Students were evacuated to the stadium after the “suspicious object” was found on campus, the Davis Unified School District announced on social media about 1:45 p.m. Students at nearby North Davis Elementary School were told to shelter-in-place as a precaution.

School district officials asked parents and the rest of the public to stay away from the high school campus while Davis Police Department and Davis Fire Department were investigating.

Authorities closed roads in the area, including Oak Avenue, 14th Street, B Street, Eureka Avenue and Beech Lane after police arrived at the school.

In a social media post about 2:20 p.m., school district officials advised Davis Senior High and North Davis parents to refer to an email sent to them that had student pick-up instructions. By 4:15 p.m., students at both schools were later released for their families to pick them up, and all students and staff had left the campus as police continued their investigation.

About 5:10 p.m., school district officials announced Davis police officers determined the object at the high school “was a fake device” and were continuing to investigate the incident.

About 1:20 p.m., police were called to the high school for a report of a student with a suspicious device in his backpack “that appeared to be a hand grenade,” Davis police told the Davis Enterprise. Officers later determined the object in the student’s backpack was a “toy” he brought to school, police said.

School district officials asked anyone with information about the circumstances surrounding Friday’s incident to call the Police Department at 530-747-5400.
