Davis police arrest man suspected of fishing cash out of lock box at Islamic Center

Officers on Wednesday morning arrested a Southern California man caught on camera fishing money out of a lock box at the Islamic Center of Davis, police said.

Ashraf Hegaz, 47, of Hemet in Riverside County was arrested on suspicion of burglary and possessing burglary tools, the Davis Police Department announced Thursday afternoon in a news release. Hegaz was booked at the Yolo County Jail.

About 8:30 a.m., police were called to the Islamic Center at 539 Russell Boulevard after receiving a report of a burglary in progress. Officers arrived and created a perimeter around the center.

Officers had access to a live security camera feed inside the center and could see a suspect who appeared to be fishing money out of the lock box and putting cash in his pocket.

Police said the suspect, later identified as Hegaz, came out of the center and was detained by officers. Hegaz had in his possession cash, a crowbar and a thin piece of metal used to commit the burglary, according to the Police Department.
