Teen arrested for manslaughter after pedestrian dies in Elk Grove hit-and-run

hit and run fatality

A teenage boy was arrested and booked into juvenile hall following a hit-and-run crash that killed a pedestrian Tuesday evening on Elk Grove’s main thoroughfare, police said.

Dispatchers received multiple 911 calls shortly after 8:30 p.m. reporting that a person was down in the roadway on westbound Elk Grove Boulevard near Shorelake Drive, the Elk Grove Police Department said in tweets.

Arriving officers located a “deceased person with injuries consistent with being hit by a vehicle,” the department wrote.

Investigators determined the pedestrian, described as a 53-year-old man, had been crossing Elk Grove Boulevard and was outside of a crosswalk when he was struck by a vehicle, the department said in a news release early Wednesday afternoon.

A few hours after the collision, the 17-year-old driver of the suspect vehicle “arrived at the Elk Grove Police Department,” according to the news release.

The teen, who was not identified, was arrested and booked into juvenile hall on charges including vehicular manslaughter, hit and run resulting in death and hit and run resulting in injury, according to the police news release.

Police determined speed was a factor in the crash, while alcohol and drugs did not play a role, according to the news release.

A passenger riding in the suspect vehicle suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to a hospital by a relative following the collision. That passenger has been contacted by officers, the Police Department said.

Elk Grove Boulevard was closed to traffic overnight in both directions, police said. All lanes reopened by about 7 a.m

The victim’s identity will be released by the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office pending notification of family.

The investigation remains ongoing. The Police Department asked anyone who may have information about the deadly incident to contact detectives at 916-714-5115.
