Sacramento man arrested with explosive device and heroin in Granite Bay, deputies say
A Sacramento man accused of possessing a dagger, heroin and a homemade explosive device was arrested last week in Granite Bay, Placer County authorities said.
A patrol deputy contacted a man standing near a suspicious vehicle stopped along Auburn Folsom Road near Camino Oro around 3:45 a.m. last Thursday, the Placer County Sheriff’s Office said in a Wednesday social media post.
After the deputy pulled behind the vehicle, the man stepped away from the deputy’s spotlight and attempted to hide from it, according to the news release.
The deputy searched the man, identified as Yevgeniy Onopko, 51, of Sacramento, and found “a realistic-looking (imitation) firearm from his jacket pocket, an 8.5’ knife, 9mm ammunition, and a clear plastic baggie containing heroin,” sheriff’s officials wrote.
“Additionally, the deputy found a homemade explosive” in Onopko’s possession, authorities wrote.
The sheriff’s explosive ordnance unit responded, gathered the item and determined it to be a homemade explosive device, sheriff’s officials said.
Onopko was arrested and booked into the South Placer Jail in Roseville on felony charges related to possession of an explosive device, a controlled substance and ammunition by a felon, as well as for carrying a concealed dirk or dagger. He is ineligible for bail due to an outstanding bench warrant for driving with a suspended license, jail records show.
Onopko pleaded not guilty in Placer County Superior Court on Monday, and is due back in court next Tuesday, records show.
