A man driving a Land Rover on Hood Franklin Road late Friday, March 25, 2022, was shot multiple times and more than 60 shell casings were found at the scene, Sacramento County sheriff’s deputies said.

The Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a Friday night shooting near the Hood area that left a driver seriously injured and the side of his SUV riddled with bullet holes, authorities said.

Dispatchers received a 911 call around 11:30 p.m. from a man who said he’d been shot in the torso while driving eastbound in the 1300 block of Hood Franklin Road, southwest of Elk Grove and west of Interstate 5, the Sheriff’s Office said in a news release Wednesday.

Arriving deputies located the victim and found him to have “significant injuries after being shot in the stomach and lower back,” authorities wrote, though he was alert and talking with deputies.

“The victim stated that he was driving his vehicle when another vehicle pulled up next to him and forced him to pull over,” the sheriff’s news release said. “Once pulled over, the driver of the suspect vehicle began shooting at the victim who was seated in his Land Rover.

“While being shot at, the victim was able to crawl over to the passenger’s side, exit his vehicle via the passenger’s front side door and escape into an open field.”

Authorities recovered more than 60 shell casings and recorded “20-plus bullet defects” on the driver’s side of the Land Rover, the news release said.

A photo of the black Land Rover released by the Sheriff’s Office appeared to show closer to 30 bullet holes across the doors, front panels, hood and front windshield of the vehicle. Its front driver’s side tire was also flattened.

The Sheriff’s Office said the victim could not provide any suspect or suspect vehicle information to investigators. No arrests have been made, and no additional information is available.

Detectives asked anyone with information about the incident to contact the Sheriff’s Office at 916-874-5115 or Sacramento Valley Crime Stoppers at 916-443-4357.
