Citrus Heights police shot and killed an assault suspect Friday after he refused to comply with orders and “was reaching into his waistband,” the department said Saturday.
Shortly before 10 p.m., officers received reports that a man was assaulting a female in the area of Woodmore Oaks and Sunrise Boulevard. Dispatch officers said the man was heard threatening to kill the woman. When police arrived, the man fled on a bicycle, but dropped his bike and continued on foot. He was chased into a residential neighborhood and then into a nearby school.
An officer reported the suspect was not complying with orders and “was reaching into his waistband,” according to a police news release. Because of the “suspect’s violent and irrational behavior,” officers believed they were in imminent danger and fired their weapons on the suspect, the department said. The department did not detail what orders the man refused to follow.
Authorities administered medical aid to the suspect, but he later died at a hospital. No officers were injured in the incident. Citrus Heights police are investigating the shooting. The officers involved have been put on administrative leave, pending the outcome.
