Woman walking Elk Grove sidewalk killed in hit-and-run. Driver arrested, police say
Elk Grove police arrested a driver accused of fatally striking a pedestrian on a sidewalk Monday afternoon and then fleeing the scene.
Officers responded around 2:45 p.m. to Fyre Creek Drive and Deepdale Way to reports of a pedestrian being struck by a vehicle that veered off the road, the Elk Grove Police Department said in a news release.
The pedestrian, identified by the Coroner’s Office as Asefa Husaini, 67, was hit while walking on the sidewalk near Rose Park.
“After hitting the woman, the vehicle drove through the park and then drove off,” the Police Department wrote. “The vehicle and its driver were quickly located and detained a short distance away by responding officers.”
The department identified the suspect as Micah Banks, 20.
Banks was arrested and booked into the Sacramento County Main Jail on charges of vehicular manslaughter and hit and run resulting in death, the Police Department said.
Jail records show Banks was released on bail early Tuesday morning.
The Police Department said it is continuing to investigate the cause and what led up to the collision.
