Pedestrian killed in hit-and-run on Interstate 5 in downtown Sacramento, CHP says

hit and run fatality

A pedestrian was killed Wednesday night in a hit-and-run on Interstate 5 in downtown Sacramento, and police are still seeking the driver, authorities said.

The California Highway Patrol responded around 9 p.m. to reports of a male pedestrian lying in the “gore point” zone of the off-ramp from northbound I-5 to J Street, the CHP North Sacramento office said in a news release.

Investigators believe an unknown vehicle traveling in the far right lane struck the pedestrian and then fled the scene, the CHP said.

The pedestrian was propelled by the initial collision and then struck by at least three subsequent vehicles, authorities said. His body came to rest two lanes over, just north of the J Street exit.

“Multiple parties,” not including the hit-and-run suspect, called 911 and waited for police to arrive at the scene, according to the news release.

CHP North Sacramento officials said there is no suspect vehicle description available, and that detectives currently have no significant leads in the case.

The victim’s identity will be released by the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office pending notification of family.

Northbound I-5 traffic was reduced to one lane until about midnight before reopening early Thursday morning, the CHP said.
