Sacramento police officers found Vigil shortly after 2 a.m. June 12, 2013, on the ground in an apartment complex parking lot in the 500 block of Bankside Way in North Natomas. He had been shot and died at the scene.
According to a story in The Sacramento Bee, police, over the course of the investigation, discovered that Nelson, just before the shooting, had observed Vigil burglarizing his vehicle. He reportedly followed Vigil and confronted him.
Police said Vigil was shot multiple times in the upper body.
