Crews knock down fire along bike trail near Cal Expo

Sacramento fire crews on Tuesday evening knocked down a fire that burned an area along the American River bike trail, prompting closure of the Capital City Freeway for about 20 minutes.

Sacramento Fire Department spokesman Roberto Padilla said the fire was reported about 3:30 p.m. in the American River Parkway area, west of Capital City Freeway. Burning in heavy vegetation and driven by wind, the 30 acre fire was erratic, raising concerns about spot fires. About 20 fire rigs responded.

No structures were threatened, and no injuries were reported. No estimate was available on the number of acres burned.

Although the fire was on the opposite side of the freeway from Cal Expo, Padilla said Cal Expo officials were alerted in case the fire made a run in that direction.

He said the freeway was shut down briefly in both directions due to smoke, and the bike trail was closed.

Padilla described this as a wildland fire burning in an urban setting. Given the drought conditions, he said, it is important for people to use caution, particularly in areas like the American River Parkway.
