Man arrested, accused of stealing from more than 80 mailboxes in West Sacramento
Police in West Sacramento arrested a man accused of stealing mail and doing tens of thousands of dollars worth of damage to mailboxes at apartment and condo buildings in the city.
The West Sacramento Police Department in a news release Thursday said it has received numerous reports of vandalism and mail theft over the past six months. Most have come in or near the Riva Common Area, a cluster of apartments and large condos near the Sacramento River.
Police said detectives conducted a surveillance operation Wednesday night on a male suspect, who is accused of using a screwdriver to pry open and steal mail from over 84 mailboxes and causing damages estimated at over $30,000.
After obtaining a warrant, patrol officers and detectives arrested the suspect during a traffic stop.
A search of his vehicle and motel room uncovered mail and other property stolen from several West Sacramento apartment complexes, according to the news release. Detectives also connected an additional female suspect to the string of thefts.
The male subject of the warrant, described as the primary suspect in the thefts, was arrested and booked into the Yolo County jail on felony charges related to mail theft and vandalism, according to the news release. Police did not identify either suspect in the release.
Photos of the stolen mail posted by the Police Department showed checks and personal identifying documents including at least one Social Security card.
One of the checks shown was for $295,089.
