Girl, 15, fatally stabbed by trespasser at Stockton high school, district says

Breaking News

A 15-year-old girl was stabbed Monday by a trespasser at a high school campus in Stockton and died at a hospital within hours, police and district officials said.

The female student was stabbed “multiple times” by a man who was trespassing at Stagg High School, Stockton Unified School District Superintendent John Ramirez Jr. said in a joint news conference with police Monday afternoon.

“Unfortunately, she did not make it,” Ramirez said, announcing that the student succumbed to injuries at a hospital.

Family told local media outlets the victim was 15-year-old Alicia Reynaga, a student and athlete for the Stagg High softball team.

Police Monday evening announced they had arrested Anthony Gray, 52, as a suspect. He was booked into the San Joaquin County Jail on suspicion of murder.

Both Ramirez and Stockton Police Department Deputy Chief Eric Kane said the man’s exact relationship with Reynaga was not clear. Kane said the alleged attacker drove to the school in a vehicle, and Ramirez said he entered the campus through the gate.

Officer Joe Silva told The Bee on Monday evening that detectives now believe this appears to be a random act and detectives were trying to determine why Reynaga was targeted.

Ramirez said staff and security were nearby at the time of the attack, but that it happened so quickly they were unable to prevent the stabbing.

“We definitely will be re-evaluating” campus security, the superintendent said.
