Sacramento County releases name of suspected gunman killed after Fair Oaks park shooting
Authorities on Wednesday released the name of a Sacramento County man shot and killed Monday in Citrus Heights after he reportedly gunned down another man in a crowded park in Fair Oaks.
Jerzain Trenado Orozco, 41, of Citrus Heights was shot to death along Madison Avenue, just east of Ventana Place in Citrus Heights, according to the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office.
The Coroner’s Office had not yet released the name of the man killed moments earlier as he was gathered with a group of at least 20 men at nearby Fair Oaks Park.
Shortly before 6 p.m., 911 operators received multiple calls reporting shots fired at the park at 11549 Fair Oaks Boulevard, just west of the Sacramento Public Library Fair Oaks branch and south of Madison Avenue. The group of men were gathered at the park playing volleyball or soccer when gunfire erupted.
A man walked up to the group, pulled out a gun and fired, targeting one of the men at the park, Sacramento County sheriff’s spokesman Sgt. Rodney Grassmann has said. The victim was later pronounced dead at the park. Grassmann said the suspected gunman then ran through the park, heading north across Madison Avenue.
The second shooting that killed Orozco occurred in front of an apartment complex in Citrus Heights after the suspected gunman was chased down across Madison Avenue by at least one armed person who shot him multiple times, Citrus Heights police spokesman Lt. Jason Baldwin has said.
Orozco was taken by ambulance to a hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
On Monday night, the police spokesman said this was not a random shooting, and the people involved knew each other.
The two law enforcement agencies were investigating the shooting, since the first fatal shooting occurred at the park in the sheriff’s jurisdiction and the other occurred in Citrus Heights.
Despite having so many witnesses at the shooting scene, investigators have not released any suspect description for the gunman in the Citrus Heights shooting. Since then, the Police Department has not announced any arrests or released any new information related to the shooting.
On Wednesday, Grassmann said the Sheriff’s Office did not have any new information to release from its investigation, but noted there’s no indication that anyone other than Orozco was responsible for the park shooting.
