A .25-caliber handgun located by deputies in a Yolo County field Tuesday, April 27, 2022. The Sheriff’s Office arrested Lynn Hayes, of Esparto, on negligent discharge and brandishing charges following an alleged hit-and-run crash on Highway 16.

Deputies arrested a suspect Tuesday accused of firing a gun following a traffic collision along Highway 16 in Yolo County, sheriff’s officials said.

Sheriff’s deputies and the California Highway Patrol received reports around 11:15 a.m. of a crash near Highway 16 and County Road 85B, between Capay and Esparto, in which shots had been fired and one of the involved vehicles fled the scene, the Yolo County Sheriff’s Office said in a Facebook post.

After canvassing the area, deputies found the vehicle on Main Street in Capay, where authorities determined the suspect had gone to a residence and fired additional rounds before fleeing on foot, the post said.

Deputies established a perimeter and located the suspect, identified as 43-year-old Lynn Hayes of Esparto, in a nearby field. A .25-caliber handgun was found in the field with Hayes, and a revolver was later retrieved from his residence, deputies wrote.

Hayes was arrested and booked into Yolo County jail on charges of negligent discharge of a firearm and brandishing a firearm, with pending additional charges from CHP for hit-and-run, the Sheriff’s Office said.

He was booked into the Monroe Detention Center in Woodland, where he remained in custody as of Wednesday morning, jail records show.
