Sacramento-area high school briefly locked down after student injured in campus fight
Encina Preparatory High School in Arden Arcade was a placed on lockdown Monday morning after a campus fight between two students led to a stabbing, injuring one of them and prompting a response from law enforcement.
The fight between the Encina High students, a girl in the ninth-grade and a girl in the 11th-grade, occurred during first period near the rear of the campus, said Raj Rai, a spokeswoman for San Juan Unified School District.
Rai said the ninth-grade student suffered minor injuries that were not life-threatening after being stabbed with a small knife. The injured girl received medical treatment.
Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Sgt. Rodney Grassmann said deputies took the other student into custody.
Campus staff, the school district’s Safe Schools team and law enforcement responded to the fight and were investigating the incident. About 10:30 a.m., the campus remained in a “precautionary shelter in place” as authorities investigated the incident, Rai said in an email.
She said students remained inside their classrooms as school instruction continued, and movement on the campus is limited. Visitors are not allowed on campus during the lockdown “to protect the safety of our students and staff, Rai said.
Katherine Johnson Middle School, which is located on the same campus, was also “in a shelter in place,” she said. School district officials asked families to not go to either school.
“We expect to lift the precautionary shelter in place once officials have completed their investigation and will share additional information at that time including student pick up,” Rai said.
By 11:15 a.m., the campus lockdown had been lifted. Rai said the school day will continue on its normal schedule, but families who want to pick up their students may do so by visiting the front office. Only parents, guardians or other adults with a photo ID authorized on a student’s emergency card are allowed to sign-out a student.
“We do anticipate a number of families wanting to pick up students so school staff ask for your patience,” Rai said. “Please plan for the pick up process to take extra time.”
