3-year-old girl dies after Sacramento-area dad hits her with van backing down driveway

Roadway fatality

A 3-year-old girl died Tuesday evening after her father unknowingly struck the toddler with a van as he was backing a vehicle down a driveway in Rio Linda, the California Highway Patrol said.

The incident was reported about 6:10 p.m. in the 7200 block of 24th Street, just north of Q Street. The child’s 43-year-old father, also from Rio Linda, was backing down the driveway in a Dodge Sprinter van, the CHP North Sacramento Area Office announced Thursday in a news release.

The CHP said the father did not know his daughter was near the left-rear of the van, which struck the girl. Medics were called to the home; the girl was pronounced dead at the scene.

The CHP said drugs or alcohol were not a factor in the collision, and criminal charges against the father were not anticipated.

Investigators asked anyone who witnessed the collision or can provide additional information to call Officer A.J. McTaggart at 916-348-2300 or by cell phone at 916-798-0975.
