20-hour standoff in south Sacramento ends when armed man surrenders, police say
Sacramento police reported a long standoff ended Tuesday night with a suspect taken into custody. The suspect reportedly led officers in a vehicle chase Monday night and barricaded himself in a home in the Valley Hi / North Laguna neighborhood.
Crisis negotiators on Tuesday worked for hours before the man surrendered without incident, the Sacramento Police Department reported just before 7 p.m. No further details were immediately available.
The suspect, who appeared to be a male adult, fired gunshots inside the home in the 5300 block of Jacinto Avenue, said Sgt. Zach Eaton, a Sacramento Police Department spokesman.
The Police Department in social media posts Tuesday morning described the incident as a response to the Jacinto Avenue home for “an armed and barricaded suicidal individual who has discharged a firearm inside his residence.”
On Tuesday afternoon, Eaton said it was unclear to police whether the suspect was firing a gun at anyone when the shots were fired. He also said investigators did not have any indication there was someone else inside the home with the suspect.
About 12:30 p.m., the home remained surrounded by police, including SWAT officers. Streets leading to the home were closed. Eaton said crisis negotiators had good communication with the suspect and were working to end the incident with a “peaceful outcome.” Police asked drivers in the area to use alternate routes.
The incident began about 10 p.m. Monday when officers responded to a report of a domestic disturbance involving a suspect who was possibly armed with a gun, Eaton said.
Officers spotted the suspect in a vehicle in the Strawberry Manor neighborhood near North Sacramento. Eaton said a vehicle pursuit ensued, and at one point the suspect crashed intentionally into one of the police patrol vehicles.
The chase led police to the Jacinto Avenue home, where the suspect was holed up for more than 20 hours. Eaton said the home was known to the suspect, and there was no indication he broke into someone else’s home.
