Sheriff’s deputies find man with five gunshot wounds in south Sacramento, suspect arrested

A man was transported to the hospital after being shot multiple times Monday evening in south Sacramento, according to the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies responded after two ShotSpotter activations around 7:25 p.m. from the area of Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and 48th Avenue. Deputies located a 48-year-old adult male with five gunshot wounds, according to a department news release.

The deputies applied a tourniquet to the victim’s leg and rendered aid on the man until Sacramento Metro Fire Department personnel could safely transport the victim away from the scene, according to the release. Emergency physicians determined the injuries were not life-threatening.

Shortly after the incident, an assisting law enforcement agency located the suspect vehicle and arrested Rand Hawkins Jr., 56, who is on active probation. Hawkins was transported to the Main Jail on one felony count, assault with a deadly weapon, according to the release.

Hawkins is being held on $75,000 bail. He is scheduled to make his first court appearance Wednesday.
