South Sacramento intersection temporarily closes after man barricades himself in car
Officers detained a man Thursday morning after he barricaded himself in his car, blocking a major south Sacramento road.
California Highway Patrol officers responded to the intersection of Florin Road and 55th Street about 7:40 a.m. Thursday on reports of a man blocking traffic and spray-painting his car.
When officers arrived, the man barricaded himself in his car and made suicidal comments, California Highway Patrol spokesman Officer Mark Leavitt said. He did not possess any weapons.
Throughout the incident, the man was behaving erratically and “not making sense,” Leavitt said. It remains unclear whether the man was under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
A crisis intervention team was able to deescalate the situation, Leavitt said, and got the man out of his vehicle and placed him on a mental health hold.
The incident shut down part of Florin Road for around two hours, according to a social media post from the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office, which assisted with the incident.
The road re-opened around 9:40 a.m.
