A Woodland man was caught and fined for setting off illegal fireworks late Monday after one ignited a small grass fire.

Just before midnight Monday, officers from the Woodland Police Department responded to the area of West Beamer Street and North Ashley Avenue after seeing aerial fireworks. When they arrived, they found a man attempting to put out a small blaze that had ignited when he set off a roman candle firework.

The fire was extinguished after charring a small patch of grass.

Officers fined the man $1,000 and released him from the scene, the police department wrote in a Tuesday social media post.
