‘Time to heal’: Sacramento nightclubs to stay closed in wake of fatal downtown shooting
Two downtown Sacramento nightclubs, not far from where a mass shooting killed one person and wounded four others on the Fourth of July, will be closed this weekend.
The owners and operators of Mix Downtown and The Park Ultra Lounge announced in Facebook posts the nightclubs will be closed from Friday through Sunday “out of respect for those impacted by the tragedy and to provide our team and our downtown community time to heal and recover.”
The shooting last weekend was reported at 1:51 a.m. outside Mix Downtown as patrons were leaving the nightclub. Gunfire struck five people, including Greg Najee Grimes, who was killed. He was a 31-year-old former football star at Inderkum High School and Boise State University. He was celebrating on the July 4th holiday weekend with friends.
Sacramento police say investigators recovered 11 shell casings and obtained security camera video of the shooting outside Mix Downtown nightclub at 16th and L streets. The Park Ultra Lounge is located just around the corner on 15th Street.
The Sacramento Police Department said on Tuesday that investigators had identified “multiple witnesses” and had canvassed the scene and surrounding areas. As of Friday afternoon, the department had not announced any arrests or released any suspect description information. Police have shared an online QR code and link to allow witnesses to download video or information of the July 4th shooting.
Mix Downtown and The Park Ultra Lounge are planning to reopen for business on Thursday.
“Thank you for your consideration, patience, and support,” the nightclubs’ management and owners wrote in the Facebook posts. “We hope to see you when we reopen on Thursday July 14th.”
