Placer County Sheriff’s deputies arrested a Galt man after a 30-minute pursuit, beginning in Colfax and continuing for 20 miles into the county.

Just after midnight on July 10, a deputy attempted to conduct a welfare check of the man while he was driving along Iowar Hill road, according to a Tuesday announcement from the Placer County Sheriff’s Office. The man, later identified as 56-year-old Curtis Stayner, sped off as soon as the deputy walked up to his vehicle.

Stayner led the deputies on a pursuit, driving recklessly and on several occasions into the opposite lane of traffic, according to the post. After the 30-minute chase, a responding deputy disabled the suspect vehicle by deploying a spike strip along southbound Placer Hills Road.

According to the post, Stayner was initially uncooperative, attempting to resist deputies. When deputies searched his vehicle, they found drug paraphernalia and open containers of alcohol.

Stayner was arrested for evading a peace officer, obstructing a peace officer, driving under the influence, possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of an open container of alcohol.
