Placer County prosecutors filed murder charges against a man accused of supplying fentanyl to a Roseville-area teen who fatally overdosed in June.

Nathaniel Cabacungan, 20, heard the homicide charge, along with allegations of furnishing a controlled substance to a minor and meeting with a minor for the purpose of engaging in lewd behavior, at a Placer County Superior Court arraignment Friday in Roseville.

Cabacungan’s arraignment was pushed to Aug. 19, and he remains in county custody without bail.

The 15-year-old girl’s death was reported June 21, the District Attorney’s Office said in a statement announcing the charges. Prosecutors in their criminal complaint allege Cabacungan possessed and transported the drug pressed into the form of Percocet pills for the purposes of sale.

Roseville and Placer County have seen a spate of fentanyl overdoses in recent months including four in three separate incidents during a 36-hour stretch earlier this month.

The synthetic opioid is about 50 times more potent than heroin and 100 times stronger than morphine.

Roseville police at the time sounded the alarm, warning of the “catastrophic effects” of an increase in fentanyl use in the region.

Placer County prosecutors have been aggressive in going after sales and use of the deadly drug. Prosecutors for the first time in February filed murder charges against a man who allegedly sold the drug to a person who later died.

Carson David Schewe, 20, is in Placer County custody on suspicion of murder and possession of a controlled substance for sale in connection with the December 2021 death. His next court date is set for Sept. 30.
