Sacramento man sentenced for possessing gun in Roseville apartment complex car chase
A Sacramento man who reportedly led Roseville police in a car chase through an apartment complex in March was sentenced to nearly six years in federal prison for illegal gun possession.
U.S. District Judge John A. Mendez on Tuesday sentenced Marcus Lawrence Weber, 26, to five years and 11 months in prison, according to a news release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Sacramento.
Weber on April 19 pleaded guilty to being a felon in possession of a firearm. Federal prosecutors said Weber was arrested in Roseville on March 16, when he was wanted on warrants stemming from four gun-related felony offenses he committed in a five-month period.
Officers found Weber driving a vehicle in Roseville and tried to pull him over. Prosecutors said he failed to stop, and the car chase ensued through an apartment complex.
Weber drove into the complex, speeding past vehicles and people, before police surrounded Weber’s vehicle in a cul-de-sac, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office. Weber got out and abandoned the vehicle, running from police while wearing a black ski-mask.
Prosecutors said Weber ran past a family with two small children, dropping a firearm before picking up the gun again and eventually tossing it in thick brush before he was captured. The gun recovered by police was a Ruger 5.7 loaded with a 20-round extended ammunition magazine with one round in the chamber.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office said Weber began his crime spree after spending a month and a half on probation for a previous felony drug trafficking conviction that involved him shooting into his neighbor’s apartment.
